Based in Cicero, Efraín currently works as a reporter for Cicero Independiente on a Youth and Schools beat that aims to redefine how young people are covered by the news.
They got their start as a 2021-2022 Cicero Independiente Fellow, Efraín focused mostly on social issues affecting students ranging from unsafe COVID-19 protocols to the impact of expulsions and over-policing in schools.
They then went on to join the 2022 MuckRock Transparency Corps Initiative they gained experience working on long form projects that were data-driven and based/supported by public records.
Most recently Efrain worked at Borderless Magazine as their Photojournalist summer intern. There they worked closely with immigrant communities to ethically and accurately share their stories. With a focus on As-Told-To’s and photo essays, Efrain opted to allow people to use their own voice to tell their stories.
